Sandy Harquail

“Exploring the interplay between concrete and clay, and drawing inspiration from brutalist architecture, is where I have found myself in the studio these days. The contrast between soft curves and rough edges embodies the delicate strength I strive to express, reflecting my life as a mother, artist, and teacher. Balancing these roles requires both resilience and tenderness, qualities I infuse into my ceramics. By blending the raw and refined, I create pieces that are both forceful and graceful, challenging traditional notions of fragility and strength.

Drawing on my two decades of working in clay, I aim to evoke a sense of wonder and appreciation for the beauty found in contrasts and the transformative power of the creative process. I am honored to be a two-time recipient of the Salt Spring Island Ceramic Award and a proud member of Fired Up! These achievements inspire my artistic journey, pushing the boundaries of ceramic art.”
