The creation of fabric and form through the wet felting of wool fibre caries so many possibilities. In my practice as a felt artist, I focus on its sculptural and painterly aspects, bringing forward my past life as a painter in watercolour and mixed watermedia. My work in felt tends to earthy colours and earthy subjects, which themselves might be details from the lush forest floor or abstracted forms based on the patterns of nature. And rocks, always rocks, imagined on flat surfaces or re-envisioned as soft pebbles, stones and boulders. That juxtaposition of soft/hard is so enjoyable.
I live in Nanaimo where I have ample opportunity to explore outdoors, and where at home I am re-wilding my front yard and maintaining a modest vegetable garden in the back. Both at home and on hikes I collect material to work with. Somewhere between felting, gardening, and caring for my grandchildren, I give beginner workshops through Nanaimo Ceramic Arts, where I get to share my excitement about felting and gain insight and inspiration through the work and approach of others.
